V10 - topic pinning and cascading

I was finally able to migrate my site over to composr, and a new VPS, and go live this past weekend. I've been fixing a few minor issues that only popup under real world use.

As an admin I created an announcement topic and marked it as "cascading". The topic isn't appearing in any other forums as I was expecting it to. The correct icons show next to the topic. Is there another setting somewhere that affects this? How can I troubleshoot this?

Any help/ideas are greatly appreciated!

Hello,

To confirm, you are expecting the cascading topic to appear in all sub-forums under the forum in which the cascaded topic was posted, correct? Or are you expecting it shows up everywhere, in every forum?

Now you have me second guessing. I had assumed a cascaded topic would show up in all forums. Is my thinking wrong?

Yes, sort-of. A cascaded topic will only show up in the forum you posted it in, and all its sub-forums.

If you want a topic to appear in every forum, post the topic as a cascaded topic in the root forum (most top-level). Let me know if that works.

Thanks, that worked!

Funny thing is, I was originally going to post it there, but I had forgotten the "add topic" button is at the bottom of the forums.

Is there anyway to have those topics at the top of the root forums instead of at the bottom? Is there a setting somewhere?

I'd be even nicer if cascaded topics would show in all forums no matter where the topic originated. Just a thought for a future composr version.   ;)

For version 10, I probably won't implement it.

However, note that v11 has a new bundled addon named "site_messaging". This allows you to have global messages at the top of pages (defined as page-links, e.g. forum:_WILD for all forum pages) where you can also specify date ranges and usergroups. I think this tool will come in handy for you when you decide to upgrade to v11.

I don't see any reason or benefit to implement it in v10 at this late stage.

I skimmed through that tutorial and think it will be very handy. I think I did something like that way back on v9 so I could have site wide announcements just under the menu bar. Too many years ago to try to remember.

As always, thanks for your help!  Also, it was good to learn you've had a little good fortune in your finances.

Yeah! And if you noticed on that tutorials page (and other ones), there's a message at the top "You are viewing tutorials for v11, click here for v10". That's a site message I added using this same system to display on tutorial pages.
