V10 - WYSIWYG editor

V10 - Is there the ability to restrict certain groups/ranks from using the WYSIWYG editor? I would like for those just starting out to not have the WYSIWYG editor and for it to be available to the "power users". The only option I could find is it's either on or off for everyone. I could find a simplified WYSIWYG option, but that doesn't seem to change anything.

Hello, no at this time it is not possible.

The "simplified" option just means they are presented a WYSIWYG editor with less buttons.

Please add to the tracker, Support > Report Issue or Feature. State that you request implementation of a privilege to use the WYSIWYG editor, on by default for everyone.

You'll get credit / points for making the request once/if implemented. Thanks!

It probably won't be implemented for v10 due to it being in long term maintenance status... but it'll be considered for v11. I can back-port it into v10 for you if you wish but it'll be on a contractual basis (e.g. you'd need to hire me to do it for you as it isn't something originally planned).

Tracker #6267

I'm not concerned about having the above implemented in V10 as V10 is just the stepping stone in the migration from a phpBB forum to V11 later.

When I chose the "simplified" option, I didn't see any difference in the number of buttons of the WYSIWYG editor. Again, I'm not concerned too much about it as V10 is just a stepping stone.

Got it.

Did you test the simplified option with a regular member? For staff, it doesn't do anything. Most Composr sites have a "test" account you can SU as an admin, and they usually just have member privileges. At the bottom in the footer, when logged in as an admin, you will have a SU box.

If it's still showing the full editor with all the buttons as test, then that might be a bug.

Yes, tested with the "test" member. No difference.

Come to think of it, if I remember correctly, a few months back during the initial install/setup, I did notice a difference number of buttons and made a comment to my co-admin about the number of buttons for a normal user compared to an admin. I've been making so many changes, I have no idea what change could have affected that.

I'm not sure either, unfortunately :(

WYSIWYG simplified option seems to be working correctly now for both admin and normal users.

Okay, that's good to hear. Perhaps it was a cache issue?

Could be, but it was over several days and all the caches available in the "website cleanup tool" were cleared multiple times. Unless there's another cache somewhere that didn't get cleared.

Anyway, I'm not worrying about it. It's either a one-off bug in my setup, or others never noticed or noticed but not cared enough to bug report for V10.

If it happens again, I'll see if I can reproduce it for bug reporting (only in case it's something that might have carried over to v11).

Okay, sounds like a plan.

I've noticed the WYSIWYG editor here has a lot less buttons than on the WYSIWYG editor on my v10 install. There's only a few less buttons on the v10 WYSIWYG editor with the "simplified" option enabled than without "simplified" option enabled.

Is that just the difference between v10 and v11?

I am not sure. That seems strange. We're using the same editor in v11 (CKEditor 4… we can't use 5 because their licence agreement does not comply with Composr's / is not FOSS friendly). It might be possible but sounds more like a bug that was fixed in v11 than a change.

To add on to this topic…

Is there a field in the database somewhere that determines which editor (WYSIWYG/simple) is default, or something in /ckeditor that controls which is the default editor.

I'm trying to figure out how to make the simple editor the default for members, but still allow the power users the ability to switch to the WYSIWYG. Basically just the opposite way it is now.

Off the bat, I know whether someone gets the WYSIWYG editor is controlled by a cookie; it's not in the database.

There is an option in v11 in Admin Zone > Setup > Configuration > Content editing options, "Enable WYSIWYG editing".

From the looks of it, I think it might be under Accessibility options in v10. Check there.

I was afraid of that. I was really hoping it would be in the db as storing it in the db would be the best approach since the choice would remain constant between cookie cleanings and most likely would be able to set a default too.

I know I can enable/disable it, but that would be for everyone. I figured disabling it would be the only easy option. I switch between the simple and WYSIWYG, and I know a few other members use the WYSIWYG, so disabling is a last resort.

I haven't checked yet if rebuilding the ckeditor would do what I want. That will be for when I want to do a new adventure.

As always, thanks for your help and insight.

I took a deeper look… it looks like v10 doesn't have the same option v11 does.

On v10, it's a simple tick box which disables it for everyone. On v11, it's a combo box with the options
- On by default
- Off by default
- Off
