Edit/delete permissions on homesite

It's a bit difficult to participate in certain conversations here on the homesite.

  • We're only allowed to edit up to 15 minutes after posting.
  • We don't have permissions to double-post, even after that 15 minutes is up.
  • We don't seem to have permission to delete our own posts, either.
So if I make a post, once 15 minutes goes by, if there's more I want to add… I can't. I have to wait for someone else to reply to my (partial) post before I can say anything else in that topic.

Is the 15 minute editing limit really necessary? 24 hours or something like that would seem more appropriate for a website like this, where it's not super high-activity and the information's not super sensitive to where we'd have to worry about people pulling rugs out from under each other by editing their posts.

I agree with extending the edit time; edited topics have an edited time stamp on them.

The double-post prevention is to prevent spam. And the delete prevention is to prevent people from deleting posts that may violate the rules (once deleted, it is gone forever unless someone reported them before they were deleted).

I'd recommend opening a measure about this for voting (regular members should be able to post there). If a simple majority (EDIT: I accidentally said super-majority at first) passes it, I'll change it.

My recommendation for the measure is the following (if passed):
  • Edit time is extended to 24 hours
  • Double-posting is granted to established members (1,000 rank points) and above
    • Alternate: Regular members (100 points), but this is far easier

Now, no one but the staff is able to delete any content; that goes beyond posts. I would suggest, given that enabling delete privileges is a semi-dangerous thing, that you create a separate measure for that one. That way, if people are for the above two, but not for deleting, or vice versa, then they can vote specifically. Be sure to be specific regarding what content types we are voting to have deleted privileges.

It will be up to you to promote the measures, so people know they exist. However, I can create a news article about it once I see that you created them.

…and you are allowed to vote on your own measures in this case.

I'm getting the following error when attempting to submit a topic to the Measures category:

I get the normal pop-up when I get the security code wrong, so I think I'm getting it right when I hit this error.

That's weird. I moved the require_code further up in the script. Try it now (as before, an autosave should exist in localStorage).

I just tried to submit the measure again. This time, I made it past the initial topic post to the screen where I could name the poll, but after that, I got another "An error has occurred" page with this message:
Your action has been blocked by our antispam system (alien_code=50, links=10, pasting=10). You may have been blocked because your IP address (2601:….) was on an external ban list which was checked by us. Or, you may have been blocked by our internal antispam heuristics. If you are a genuine user, please run a virus scan, secure your network, and try again in a few days. If you are using a proxy, VPN, or Tor, consider disabling it or changing regions. Please do not try repeating your action again too soon or too frequently or you could end up getting banned.

Ugh… tell you what, send it to me at [email protected]. I'll create it and reassign ownership of the topic to you.

I have no idea why it's flagging the post as alien code. If you send me the raw text in an e-mail, I can take a look and create a tracker issue for it.
