This happens in other instances as well. Might have to do with the wide_overlay URL parameter.

PMs opening in overlay mode / wide high when loaded as full URL (e.g. wordfilter blocks).

This was an issue in do_form_submit which would leave / set the form target to _top, causing the overlay to direct the browser to a wide_high / overlay style page.

I added a clause in there that if overlay=1 is in the URL, then we set the form target to _self instead, which will make the overlay, not the browser, load the URL, as it should.
