It actually works a lot better if you force the hyperlink media renderer, as that uses the OpenGraph description...

[media type="hyperlink"]http://unitedmediapublishing.com/first-tampon-for-transgender-women-to-hit-shelves-next-month/[/media]

If you just want a URL you need to explicitly do...

[url]http://unitedmediapublishing.com/first-tampon-for-transgender-women-to-hit-shelves-next-month/[/url]

or set it as an <a> in WYSIWYG.
