Nope, this is a feature, you can select multiple individual files to upload now. I can't remember when we added it.

After hearing your reply, I told a user that she could now select multiple individual photos to upload together. She then said it didn't work; only one photo would upload.

I tested it just now and sure enough, only one out of the three test photos I uploaded actually shows up.

Ah, this was actually a bug with the plupload addon we fixed a couple of patches back (I'm aware you can't currently update). I've uploaded the patch for you.
