The reasoning here is we want to make sure that users giving up points in Idolisr (effectively doing charitable contributions) have some amount of acknowledgement. Being an OSS contributor is asymmetric, lots of people benefit from work done by a relative few. For this reason it's not realistic to expect the OSS contributor to thank each beneficiary personally, and this automated thanks message was a small gesture Patrick and I came up with when we were discussing this asymmetry problem.
