An alternative is to allow gift transactions to run from regular points when there are not enough gift points.

E.g.
Bob has 100 points and 10 gift points and wants to give 20 points to Sue. Bob now has 0 gift points and 90 points.

I think I prefer this, it's simpler for the user and less UI overhead and code.
