Why not just remove it if you don't want it? It wasn't designed to be some kind of admin feature, it's a front-end navigation feature.

I want it, it's handy. I just don't want it viewable to all. I'll carry on using if_in_group tags :)

Pretty much, I have a lot of pages so it's helpful at a glance. I suppose I could edit the actual block rather than each instance of it.

Use the "Display page sitemap" feature. It's linked under Content Management > Pages (Comcode pages).

I just tested it and found a couple of glitches which I've just fixed.
