The concern has been if people don't maintain their sites, or if they don't renew their domain and it turns into a spam/porn portal, that'd be embarrassing.
The solution to that is some kind of upvote/downvote system, or reporting system.
EDIT: Implementing for v10, will need adding to the v11 website design too.
Ideally we would build this via a custom block that scans forums.ini.
In 2024, people have little reason to create and host their own website. The use cases of the past have been broken by 3 dominant scenarios:
1) People just do a Facebook Page or Group, or a Subreddit, or a Discord - because they are a small operation and recognize that being online is what matters more than actually having a standalone website
2) They use a website builder - because these tools are quick and easy
3) They don't exist, because late-stage capitalism has sucked out the opportunities through aggressive takeovers consolidating industries (i.e. large corporates rule and have taken most of the oxygen out of the room)
Our marketing should be very clear that Composr is an alternative to these corporate systems. A revolutionary alternative to all the corporate-BS where you get actual freedom and control, rather than playing into the hands of corporations. That's much more niche, but that's not a bad thing. Composr always struggled to compete with Wordpress etc, which took the common denominator of the market (which is shrinking) - and Composr was always more principal/freedom based and independent, but we never did a good job of marketing it like that. If we market it properly we hopefully will do a better job aligning with the more anarchist/small-l-libertarian space.
We are self-funded/developed, no VCs calling the shots, no rug pulls, no enshittification. We stand against corporate control, late stage capitalism, centralization, loss of individual control and rights, walled gardens, races to the bottom. We are proudly Open Source. We are controlled by the community, via our unique DAO-inspired control mechanism - not corporates, not investors, not any kind of cabal of elites chosen for their connections and/or characteristics.
If we get our messaging right, and support what we say we are for properly, I think users will be forgiving that we don't currently have a lot of resources to dedicate to web design. Users may even appreciate that we are a bit raw, and see that as a reflection of our ideals being what is actually driving us.
