I'm marking this resolved as I've made some changes. Mainly I have started deleting old active/inactive events when the active/inactive status is changed - I suspect old events were causing some JS actions.

I cannot relate this to the online friends list though, as that's not event-driven. More likely in that case is someone leaving their browser open.
