Ideally we would convince Chrome and Apple to add apng support and dump animated gifs. apngs would not have this problem. But that seems unlikely ;).

To my surprise apng is now supported in Firefox, Safari, and soon Chrome. So a better solution is progressive enhancement to apng files that we ship. New issue being opened.
