Summary777: New Site Currency System to replace/enhance points
DescriptionA system to configure different types of site currencies that can replace or at least enhance the points system.

The Admin could name several currencies if they like (eg: ocBucks, ocPoints, ocJewels etc) the on actions around the site (and/or certain modules) the admin can use that type of currency as a reward for things. As well currencies could be traded or exchanged for each other or Real currencies.

eg: Admin names a currency "Support Credits" and it costs 3 support credits to sponsor a feature like here on compo.sr and then the admin can choose to set an exchange rate for real cash for support credits like $10us = 1 Support Credit and/or Site points can be exchange for Support Credits at a rate of 1000 site points for 1 support credit. Another example is Admin names a currency "Realm Bucks" that could be used as a currency in the Buildr Addon and actions (or gifts or items found in the game) could be assigned that particular currency without fully affecting the rest of the sites main currencies (like points) Something like this could have wide reaching uses and a myriad of unique site loyalty building options.
Additional InformationJust posting in here as a feature suggestion although I don't expect it to be developed by Composr Staff without sponsorship but perhaps myself and/or other coders might take up its cause?

Really, this is a fun kind of thing, so not so much Composr, but something for non-bundled-addon-land.
(Imagine someone using Composr for their boring real world business, this would just baffle them ;-) )

Should this be done as a part of Buildr?

I imagine you would acquire such things in there, and maybe you could convert them to points (liquidate them) but pay a currency transfer fee when doing so - so it's better to hold on and trade directly.

Buildr could provide the services, but then other addons, like the bank one, could make use of it if Buildr was installed.

Chris said: "Imagine someone using Composr for their boring real world business, this would just baffle them ;-) "

On the contrary I actual have some realworld applications I would like to use it for one day. 1 example is on some sites where I accept donations I would like to award donators a special currency for the amounts they donate which could be traded for extra privileges or "Blatant" type site options (ie special collections of gifts that can be traded/accumulated by them. With every action on the site belonging to points it is hard to create "Currency Values". A good real world example of something like this in action is your "Support Credits" which is a power you could put in the hands of the people.

Another realworld use I would use it for is my own business. I do a lot of Barter and I would make a currency called "BarterBucks" that would be used to represent Barter Values when trading with clients. ie: I have Art client that traded me $4000 worth of work that I can spend in his store on art but I want to buy a car from my mechanic that he is selling for $4000 I can trade him my barter bucks so he can buy some art.

Fair enough :). I'm still not thinking bundled though, so now I am imagining a new non-bundled addon that other addons can make use of.

if (addon_installed('rich_currencies',true))
{
   require_code('rich_currencies');
   ...
}

Sounds like the proper approach.

Perhaps the Bankr should be rebuilt to manage the currencies. In there currencies can be defined and exchange rates set-up etc then Addons can draw their currencies from the bank?

My thoughts were mapping exchange rates in 2 options:

1 way => eg: Real $ can be traded for "Support Credits" at $10us = 1 Support Credit"
2 way <=> eg: "Site Points" can be traded for "Advertising Credits" at 1000pts = 1 "Ad Credit" or 1 Ad Credit can be exchanged back for 1000 site points.

Another way this can be useful is something like Digital Downloads. Purchase this Download for $30us or 3000 Site Points? (or Advertising space etc)

This may be complex but it could really add value to many sites I believe.

Looking forward to seeing it ;). You have my approval to go to town on the bank and Buildr addons in git :).

I was going to start tackling this but after much debate in the community it seems it may not be as desired by most as I thought it might so for now I am putting it on hold and will focus on other areas first. I am not 100% sure I wish to abandon this yet therefor I will not close this tracker item yet.

(Just pulling a time estimate out of nowhere so it's not stuck on 'none' time)
