We'll need to make sure mark as read operations update the figure dynamically, currently that doesn't work.

True that. I need more experience with Javascript/AJAX before I comfortably do anything with it.

Salman - there's a feature__notification_blink_numbers branch that needs merging that includes these changes. If you feel any further changes are needed, go ahead and do them.
