| Description | For businesses operating out of the EU, the VAT system applies.
This is subtly different from sales tax in most other countries. It's a consumer tax, businesses don't pay it per se, so long as they are registered and operate the system for the government. Businesses charge VAT to customers, get effective-rebates on VAT they paid, or can avoid paying VAT altogether by giving their VAT number when making a purchase. Currently we don't support business customers putting in a VAT number to avoid paying. If we do this, we should verify the VAT number given (http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/), then we log it all and zero out the tax. Not supporting this system is not a big deal for most customers, as the businesses customers get their effective-rebate anyway when they do their VAT return. |
