The uploads directory is reserved for stuff actually manually uploaded, as it is liable to be erased upon reinstalls. data/images is often used for stock images that aren't theme images.
The disk filename is usually either randomised or based on the uploaded file's name, rather than the resource codename. The URL for it gets encoded, so for example spaces become %20.
However of course there should be no 500 error. Is anything in your error logs about this, or is there any Composr error message associated? Do you mean when the banner is clicked, or when you view it's stats?
