Using SU to check their visibility with Guest and then test as a group member, just in case that matters somehow to the outcome.
No, this feature is simply because people in different groups may require different information on their profiles. E.g. Gamers may want Favourite Game. It's nothing to do with conveying secrets.

I'll check the description for the group choice field when adding/editing CPFs in case the purpose isn't clear.

Conveying secret information between groups within profiles would be very particular, I doubt we'd ever have a core feature like that.
Ok so it isn't clear, making this change...

Only use this Custom Profile Field for these member usergroups.

Only provide this Custom Profile Field within the profiles of members within these usergroups.
Okay, maybe I can do something on the profile template to only show these CPF's to group members, as making these fields public in my case is pointless given they are for a specific case which is irrelevant to most members. Thanks for making it clearer.
Yeah actually, should be able to use {+START,IF,{$IS_IN_GROUP,5}}...{+END} or something around them.
