I downloaded version 8 I think(late 2013).
Can I simply upgrade to composr from my current version?
Is there any websites out there that a running Composr, to have a look at?
looking forward to see what differences there are.

EDIT: I will admit I'm cheating though and will probably launch my website before the CMS enters the RC stage (you can slap me now). Reason being is my website is going to be a part of a class project, and unfortunately it cannot wait until April. Composr CMS was the best fit for what I need… even more so than the stable v9 ocPortal. I'll be letting my users know clearly that the site is in beta and to report all problems. In fact, my users in a way would be a help to contributing to ironing out the bugs. And of course daily / multi-day backups are a must during the beta phase.
I still would advise against doing what I'm doing though because beta software is not just prone to bugs, but security exploits as well. Wait until it's stable to use it on a live site if at all possible. Of course we could always use an extra set of eyes if you want to test the beta on a non-live server and report your findings.

From experience, v10 is a major jump when it comes to interface, security, features, and such… I can see why Chris wanted to release it under a new name lol. But unfortunately even 10 beta 2 is still very unstable at the moment. I predict (though be aware I am not speaking for Chris) Composr will need to go through 3-4 betas before it's stable enough to enter the Release Candidate stage. Chris' roadmap indicates that if we were to remain on schedule, Composr will enter RC stage sometime in March, and then the first stable version in April.

I think beta 3 will see very few bugs. I think the bugs will flare up once it's in release and production installs see live action. It will probably be very close to what v9 went through when it came out. If I remember correctly, it took awhile for v8 users to make the jump to v9 (due to theme compatibility).
I don't know what the stats are (v9 vs. v10 at this release cycle) for downloads, but it seems not as many v9 users have made it over to Composr yet. That is why I think b3 will be quiet and we will see a flare up of bugs once Composr goes to release and gets hammered by 1000's of members on 100's of live sites.
Even so, Chris will be on top of those bugs. (This is one reason why I think ocPortal/Composr is head and shoulders above other CMS's.)
