News / blog "separation"?

The folks I am helping with their Composr based website have asked me to make the news public but the member blogs private (i.e. - accessible only to logged in members).  I've not been able to find a way to achieve that since the blogs are part of the news system.  Is there some kind of workaround that will accomplish that?

Blogs are categories. Edit them and set category permissions.
